District: UPDATED: SCAD issues statement on H1N1 protocols

Andrew Carson · 4 months agoDoes this protocol mean if a student has flulike symptoms (effectively 5-6 days or more according to the CDC) they will have an excused absence from class for the length of illness plus 24 hours after fever has subsided? I ask because I know many students myself included that would not want to miss class period but especially if it counted toward the 4 absences, it seems like if this is not the case it could make the flu situation much worse at SCAD.

anonymous · 4 months agoIn addition to Andrew's comment, I (and many others) do not appreciate students coming to school while they're sick. It happens constantly due to the 4-day absence protocol and it's a health risk I'd rather not take with such a contagious virus circulating. Until the H1N1 virus is under control, student's should definitely be encouraged to stay home and out of public spaces while recovering from the flu, with the option to work from home and not be penalized.

david · 4 months agoI echo what the other posters have said. SCAD absolutely must revisit their absentee policy. Not doing so is irresponsible in the face of a H1N1 Pandemic. We would greatly appreciate a response from SCAD administration on this issue.

Jessie C · 4 months agoYes, I think students should stay home if they are sick, but I do not agree that there is anything wrong with the attendance policy. 4 Absences is by far plenty to get you through the quarter during emergencies. Students need to be more responsible and stop sleeping through their alarms and skipping class due to their poor time management. Then they could comfortably use their absences when they actually need to.
